Just had a look at the 17 manual (page 87) and it looks like the battery is actually on the mobo which may be a little annoying to get to. This may not do anything but it worked for me. Disconnect the battery, wait about 30 secs and then use a wire or pin and bridge the pins on the connector. 6 Disconnect all attached devices from your computer. 5 Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets. (I was playing trough a Monitor) From now on everytime I try to start my Laptop the Screen is black (LCD and external Monitor) and starts to beep 8 times. Some Seconds later on the Laptop shut itself down. 4 Press and eject any installed cards from the 9-in-1 Media Card Reader. Then the Screen suddenly turned black and began to beep. 3 Disconnect all telephone or network cables from the computer. It should be connected to the motherboard with a 2 pin connector. computer and then unplug the cable from the network device. I haven't seen inside the new 17 so I can't tell you exactly what it looks like or where it is. Open your machine up and try to find the small disk shaped CMOS battery.

It helped me get rid of my 8 beep code on my M18x R2 after reinstalling the NVidia driver recently. Have you done any GPU driver updates recently? Do you have the 3D screen option or Windows 8? If so it may also be a GPU problem since the LCD is only run from the GPU (unless you manually switch it to Intel graphics)
